Consecutive interpretation is one of the types of interpretation during which a speaker makes pauses occasionally what is necessary for an interpreter to convey the speech as close to the original as possible. Generally, these pauses are small since a professional interpreter usually formulates interpretation during the speaker’s speech and pronounces it during the pause. Consecutive interpretation requires special and serious education and training.
Usually consecutive interpretation is used during carrying out of events with relatively small number of participants. This type of interpretation is very effective in the process of “mobile” nature of communications with a big number of moves, transportations: during work at industrial sites, negotiations with further excursions and so on.
Events which are usually carried out with the help of consecutive interpretation:
- business communications
- telephone conversations
- seminars, meetings, round tables with a small number of participants
- briefings, press-conferences
- presentations, exhibitions
- banquets, festivities
- assembling and adjusting of equipment with participation of foreign specialists
- carrying out excursions for foreign guests, delegation and travel accompaniment.
Advantages of consecutive interpretation in comparison with simultaneous interpretation:
- it does not require additional technical equipment which increases mobility of the event.
- can be carried out in action, for example, during work at industrial objects, conversations at presentations, during delegation accompaniment
- the participants have additional time which can be used to consider the following statement (for example, at business communications)
- in many cases it is enough to engage one qualified interpreter, in comparison with simultaneous interpretation, where it is necessary to engage at least two simultaneous interpreters
Disadvantages of consecutive interpretation in comparison with simultaneous interpretation:
- carrying out of an event can take more time because of pauses for consecutive interpretation
- generally interpretation is only done into one foreign language
- limited number of participants of the event
